In a strange twist of fate, the Yankees and Dodgers are 21-21 against each other in the postseason since the start of the 1953 World Series. Despite the disparity in the all-time matchup when it comes to title wins against each other, the two teams have split the last six Fall Classics they have played against one another.

Left fielder Alex Verdugo made a running catch in foul territory to retire Ohtani on Cortes’ first pitch. Verdugo’s momentum sent him tumbling over the low retaining wall, advancing both runners one base because by rule it became a dead ball when Verdugo wound up in the stands.
The New York Yankees purchased Babe Ruth’s contract from the Boston Red Sox after the 1919 season, appeared in their first World Series two years later in 1921, and became frequent participants thereafter. The 1921 World Series was the first to be broadcast on radio. Over a period of 45 years from 1920 to 1964, the Yankees played in 29 World Series championships, winning 20. The team’s dynasty reached its apex between 1949 and 1964 when the Yankees reached the World Series 14 times in 16 years, helped by an agreement with the Kansas City Athletics, after that team moved from Philadelphia during 1954–1955 offseason, whereby the teams made several deals advantageous to the Yankees, until ended by new Athletics’ owner Charles O. Finley.
The best pro football teams in 1902 had been the Phillies and Athletics of Philadelphia, the Stars of Pittsburgh, and the Red and Blacks of Watertown, New York. Unfortunately, O’Rourke was unable to get any of those teams to participate in his hastily scheduled tournament. However, players from both the Phillies and Athletics got together and formed their own team that became known as the “New York” team. The other teams accepting O’Rourke’s invitation included the Orange, New Jersey Athletic Club; the Warlow Athletic Club; the New York Knickerbockers; and the Syracuse Athletic Club. O’Rourke’s plan was to set up a schedule that would allow the favored hometown Knickerbockers to play the neighboring Orange Athletic Club in the final Championship Game. This, he thought, would guarantee the best attendance and resulting gate receipts on New Year’s Day. Hoping to eliminate the weaker teams early, O’Rourke scheduled the Syracuse and “New York” teams to open the series and play pro football’s first indoor game on Dec. 28. O’Rourke incorrectly assumed “New York” would defeat Syracuse and then the stronger Knickerbockers would defeat both the weak Warlow Athletic Club and then the “New York” team. What the promoter did not count on was Syracuse loading up with “ringers” from other teams, including the entire backfield of the powerful Watertown Red and Blacks. The bolstered Syracuse A.C. not only won its opener 5-0, but also clobbered the Knickerbockers and Orange Athletic Club by 36-0 scores and claimed the 1902 indoor World Championship. 1972: A’s 3, Reds 2Game 1 set the stage for an epic seven-game series between a pair of juggernauts. A’s catcher Gene Tenace was the hero in the opener, giving Oakland a two-run lead with a homer in the second, then crushing a go-ahead shot in the fifth, which accounted for half of the four hits against Cincinnati’s Gary Nolan. In that one game, Tenace doubled his entire hit total over Oakland’s five-game American League Championship Series win over the Tigers, when he went 1-for-17, and his homers helped the A’s ride to a 3-2 victory. Tenace went 8-for-23 in the series with four homers and a 1.313 OPS en route to earning the World Series MVP Award.
During that span, the Yankees played in all World Series except 1954 and 1959, winning nine of them. From 1949 to 1953, the Yankees won the World Series five years in a row; from 1936 to 1939 the Yankees won four World Series Championships in a row. There are only two other occasions when a team has won at least three consecutive World Series: 1972 to 1974 by the Oakland Athletics, and 1998 to 2000 by the Yankees.
The 19th-century competitions are, however, not officially recognized as part of World Series history by Major League Baseball, as it considers 19th-century baseball to be a prologue to the modern baseball era. As late as approximately 1960, some sources treated the 19th-century Series on an equal basis with the post-19th-century series. After about 1930, however, many authorities list the start of the World Series in 1903 and discuss the earlier contests separately. (For example, the 1929 World Almanac and Book of Facts lists “Baseball World’s Championships 1884–1928” in a single table, but the 1943 edition lists “Baseball World’s Championships 1903–1942”. )
Game around the world
Around the World is a casual basketball game played with any number of players. You can even play it by yourself to test your shooting skills and endurance. The goal of the game is to make a series of consecutive shots from designated locations on the court. To play, start with the ball near the right block and shoot a short-range jump shot or lay the ball up. Then, step outside of the arc near the corner baseline and shoot a 3-point shot. If you make it, take the ball and move roughly 6 feet or so to your left and shoot another 3-pointer from behind the arc. Continue this process by working your way around the 3-point line and finish with a shot near the baseline on the other side of paint. Most Around the World circuits include 10 shots or more. If you miss a shot, start over. You win if you make it all the way around court. You can put your own spin on the game by changing the locations of each shot as well. A lot of players will move to the free throw line or the top of the key when they get to the top of the arc, for example. So long as the locations for each shot are predetermined and you work your way around both sides of the court by hitting consecutive shots, it counts!
