Heron also recommends the “clever and beautiful” Parks, which he describes as “a wonderful, evocative hike through the National Park System of America shazam online casino reviews.” Players take on the role of hikers as they navigate different trails, collecting memories of the different places they visit. The game is played in four rounds, each one representing one of the seasons with the trail tiles being rearranged before players begin the next round. The game features 48 unique illustrations from over 35 artists, as well as 102 color-coded wood tokens that feature 12 delicately carved animals native to the country’s parks.

Why we love it: Set in the original trilogy era of Star Wars, Outer Rim lets you play as a smuggler, a scoundrel, or a bounty hunter—or all three—as you travel between various wretched hives of scum and villainy in search of Fame. Playing as classic Star Wars characters is obviously a treat, but our favorite aspect of Outer Rim is that it doesn’t promote the cutthroat, relationship-destroying competitiveness of games like Catan or Risk. You’re all playing for Fame, but it’s not a zero-sum resource. There’s no need to attack other players. You can if you want to—you are a scoundrel, after all—but there’s equal benefit to helping others. Despite its complexity, the game is also easy to pick up and exceptionally well balanced; over a few dozen games, the winners never finished more than a few Fame points higher than the “losers.”

Another study2 found other motivational factors using Richard Ryan and Edward Deci’s Self Determination Theory3. That is a theory which states that human behavior is driven by the need for competence, autonomy, and relatedness. If those needs are met, we enjoy activities more, even in gaming. Competence is fulfilled in games through flow, which is a completely focused mental state, and is used to explain the enjoyment of games. Flow is met in games when a game challenges the player enough so that it is still interesting and makes gamer want to continue to play, but not too hard where it is not fun anymore or too easy where it becomes boring. Autonomy is met because we have control in games and we voluntarily play games. Lastly, relatedness is fulfilled because we are able to interact and compete with others in a way and world that’s different from real life.

Another strategy involves pattern recognition. If the word seems to follow the structure of a specific kind of word, like a verb in the past tense or a plural noun, you can make educated guesses based on that. For example, if you have “_ _ _ e d,” you might guess that the word is a past tense verb and consider common letters that could fit the pattern. Managing incorrect guesses is also important; it’s advisable to keep track of wrong letters to avoid repeated errors. Adopting these strategies can make your Hangman gameplay more effective.
