The leading lady of Fellowship and Fire, New World’s first season, Grace is now the one who sends you scouring the wrecks for records and loot. In our interview, Lane tells me that he’d encourage players to play again “just to hang out with Grace,” and I agree that she certainly injects a bit more life into the initial fetch and return quests.

I’d be a liar if I said I didn’t prefer New World’s original ship graveyard to Aeternum’s. I’m a sucker for that Pirates of the Caribbean ‘dead men tell no tales’ vibe, and I’d rather have seen that area revamped instead of completely reenvisioned. I can’t deny, however, that this is a far more exciting intro to the game. Graphically it’s gorgeous, and narratively it’s a lot stronger – if I was playing this for the first time, it’d leave me in awe.

New World: Aeternum is a thrilling action RPG (role-playing game) experience for console and PC players, with a vibrant world, vast and beautiful setting, dynamic, real-time action combat, and the freedom for players to choose how to forge their destiny. Players can opt to adventure solo or team up with others as they traverse the stunning and diverse natural setting, build a home or a stronghold to defend their community, engage in thrilling real-time action combat through small- and large-scale player-versus-player battles, and unravel the mysteries of Aeternum.

This sci-fi adventure is not for everyone, but those who enjoy punishing experiences will find a lot to love, particularly within the layered story. While Returnal can be admittedly frustrating at times, it’s worth pushing through the pain to get to the credits.

“Hollow Knight” is a Souls-like Metroidvania set in a hauntingly beautiful world that you’ll want to explore every inch of. Unfortunately, doing so takes a lot of trial and error! Enemies, particularly bosses, are absolutely brutal, and battling against them can leave you feeling hollow yourself! But the moments between bosses can be just as difficult, since maps aren’t always reliable, and the platforming challenges can be equally deadly. Anyone who has taken on the Path of Pain is sure to have gotten hand cramps at the very least! Don’t get us wrong though – “Hollow Knight” is incredibly fun, and we can’t wait for the sequel!

Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the Top 20 hardest video games of the century. For this list, we’ll be looking at the most difficult and challenging video games released in the 21st century…so far, at least. If there’s a grueling modern game you want to grill us for not including, “git gud” in the comments!

Another FromSoftware eldritch nightmare, “Bloodborne” has its own set of difficulties to set it apart. Along with its gothic horror aesthetic, “Bloodborne” encourages an aggressive playstyle, rewarding you for dodging, countering, and striking from behind. Some key items, like healing Blood Vials or Silver Bullets, don’t come back after you die, which is horrendous when you’re fighting a tough boss, of which there are of course many. Speaking of which, would it have killed them to put lamps closer to the bosses?! And that opening level makes for a steep learning curve! No leveling up until you fight the first boss?! Sheesh…

Set during a fantastical Sengoku era Japan, “Nioh 2” is one of many Souls-like games that take the action-RPG combat and punishing difficulty of the games that inspired it and puts its own spin on it. “Nioh 2” has a steep learning curve, particularly in the beginning. Figuring out its various systems can be tough to do on the fly, and it includes new ways to make you tear your hair out by including features like the Dark Realm, which slows your ki regeneration, adding an extra layer of headaches. But fans of this style of games will find a lot of love, provided you don’t mind being repeatedly freed from this mortal coil.

World game

Around the world, PUBG has a strong fan base and is considered one of the most played games of all time. The popular battle royale game, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG), was created and released by PUBG Corporation. In the game, 100 players are dropped onto an island to scavenge for tools and weapons while fighting to survive. Available in both first-person and third-person perspectives, players can choose to play solo or in teams. Since its 2017 release, PUBG has inspired many other battle royale games with its intense gameplay and vast open world.

Heroes are categorized into different roles such as carry, support, offlaner, midlaner, and jungler, which dictate their responsibilities in the game. While Dota 2 is free to play, it demands more from hardware compared to some other MOBA games, requiring a reasonably good PC to run smoothly, especially at higher settings.

The idea for a multi-sport event for non-Olympic sports came from the General Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF). Realising that there were few opportunities to become part of the Olympic program, non-Olympic federations wanted to form their own showcase event to increase the publicity of their sports, which they called The World Games. These federations formed a steering group in early 1979 to decide on the structure and principles of the games and search for a venue.

By 1993, the World Game Institute developed and sold an educational software package called Global Recall, which contained global data, maps, an encyclopedia of world problems, and tools for developing solutions to world problems. The package was a computer-based simulation game intended for use by high school and college students in learning about world problems and how to solve them.

These opportunities for exploration also extend to the space above each planet, which have their own optional objectives to complete. The space above Kijimi, for example, takes you through the tunnels of a stellar storm cloud, with winding paths and roving bandits to deal with as you search for valuables among derelict ships and space stations.

The team at Ubisoft’s Massive has repeatedly emphasized that Star Wars Outlaws is all about fulfilling that scoundrel fantasy – and that means everything, including the open world, is built to fulfill that dream. You might overhear a whisper in a cantina that points you toward some lucrative score at a hidden base out in the wilds, giving you an actual, story-driven purpose for your exploration. My hands-on time had me stunned by just how organic the devs have managed to make this all feel.

What I think the continual march of the genre has made clear, though, is that “living” anywhere is often a repetition of boring daily tasks: going to work, doing the laundry, cooking dinner. I don’t think I want to be “immersed” (whatever that means) in an open world anymore; I want to have a nice, tailored experience that lets me do something new and fresh. I think if Massive had built a tighter, more focused adventure and stepped away from the current model of open-world games, the studio would have made a defining Star Wars game. The elements of something great are all here. As it is now, the result is a game that tries to do so much that it simply doesn’t have the time, energy, or resources to fully succeed at any of it.

Take on high-risk, high-reward missions from the galaxy’s crime syndicates. Steal valuable goods, infiltrate secret locations, and outwit enemies as one of the galaxy’s most wanted. Every choice you make influences your ever-changing reputation.

There’s no better display of the magic in space westerns than those moments where Star Wars focuses on its underworld. Perhaps then I shouldn’t have been surprised when, after spending four hours wandering the open world of Star Wars Outlaws, I found myself feeling like I’d returned to the Wild West deserts of the original Red Dead Redemption.
