What is the most popular game in the world
10:10 p.m. — Edman starts things out with a liner to Verdugo who makes the catch. Cole earns his sixth strikeout of the night the next at-bat, getting Smith swinging on five pitches is breckie hill natural. Lux flies out to Soto to end Cole’s 1-2-3 inning, the score locked at two.
9:52 p.m. — Cole walks Muncy as his cinematic night slowly spatters out in front of his eyes, and Boone takes a visit. The pitcher responds, as Kiké grounds into a force out to Volpe who gets Muncy at second. The Yankees nightmare inning ends with the score back even and 4.5 frames to go.
The Dodgers scored 25 runs to the Yankees’ 24. New York outhomered, outhit and outwalked Los Angeles. And yet the Dodgers won the World Series in convincing fashion, over five games, because they were better in close contests. It took a walk-off grand slam in Game 1, a pair of 4-2 wins (Games 2 and 3) and a 7-6 nail-biter in Game 5, but the Dodgers didn’t make any enormous mistakes, and the Yankees handed them gift after gift in the deciding game.

Previously, he covered Penn State, high school and local sports beats for NBC Sports, the Centre Daily Times, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, The Daily Collegian and LancasterOnline. He grew up in Lancaster, Penn., with a love for baseball that’ll never fade, but could also talk basketball or football for days.
In that moment, with the Yankee Stadium crowd again silenced by Freeman’s first-inning fireworks, it appeared an apt time to start etching his name on the MVP trophy and to prepare the Dodgers’ postgame party. The Yankees, after all, had not led in a game since right before Freeman’s walk-off salami in Game 1, and they stranded two runners in the bottom of the first in this one to prolong their pain.
Take it from someone who attended every single game in the Bronx during the 2009 World Series: Yankee Stadium is usually a lot louder than this. There were occasional moments Monday night when Yankees fans got going a little bit, but after Freeman’s first-inning home run, there was a clear lid on the place they were never able to blast through. That’ll happen when your team doesn’t score a run until the ninth inning and your superstar, your beloved MVP, goes 0-for-3 again. (It is becoming actively painful to watch those slow-motion closeups of Aaron Judge’s face after his at-bats.)

But in the eighth, the Dodgers capitalized on a costly defensive miscue. Ohtani rocketed a Tommy Kahnle changeup for a double off the top of the right-center field wall. Juan Soto’s one-hop throw back to the infield bounced off Gleyber Torres’ glove, and Ohtani was able to advance to third.

It was Yankees-Dodgers. It was Freddie Freeman vs. Nestor Cortes. It was bases loaded and two outs. It was the 10th inning in Game 1 of the World Series. It was the slugger with a bum ankle against a lefty who hadn’t pitched in a month.
