Reaching that level of proficiency takes time, but Rain World’s approach to progression makes that time for you. One of the many axes of difficulty in Rain World is its “karma” mechanic, which prevents players from moving past a region until they have survived a certain number of cycles in a row. This can be frustrating because it penalizes the already inconvenient and demoralizing process of in-game death. However, there is also a kind of liberation in this system; once you’ve hit the lowest karma possible, there’s nothing more to lose by dying. To me, it felt like the game was telling me that it was okay to fail, that I was not expected to be able to cope with all of the challenges facing me yet. In the many cycles that I found myself with minimum karma, I was free to play adventurously, to explore both the world and the controls of the slugcat. As I did so, I began to worry less about the vague idea of progress and more about just existing in Rain World as it was, indulging in the joy of discovery.
On the menu selection screen, Artificer appears a dull red, despite their disappearance during the final scene. Unique to Artificer, two faint lights can be seen behind them, one green and one light blue.
Of any metroidvania I played, Rain World by far feels to be the most hostile and brutal of them all, solely due to the focus drifting away from the usual combat and upgrade format the genre’s been known for. Yet despite that, I still got an odd satisfaction at poking around and getting more and more of the map uncovered, and making my own path forward until I saw the next shelter and found a good place to stockpile for hibernation. It also really helps to have multiple difficulties available and even an optional set of accessibility toggles to poke around with, which made going back to it now as a Monk way more approachable than my first time as a Survivor all those years ago. That doesn’t mean it manages to be easy, though.

This app is really a great app. It’s challenging enough to make me want to keep trying, but it’s not so hard that I get frustrated and bored. It starts out with highlighting a country and from a multiple choice you select which country. Then as you raise in levels the selections get more challenging adding things like, capitols, flags, boarder outlines. But, if you don’t feel like going more difficult, you can customize just how challenging it is. I like this feature so I can focus on improving each bit of knowledge. A feature I really like, when you answer a question, you can get more information where it tells you everything; country, capital, flag, population, country outline, highest elevation, country motto, etc. I especially enjoy clicking on this for countries I know very little about. Doing so has really helped me answer later questions, when I remember flags and capitols.
I have never reviewed an app before, but I just have to write this one… I am so impressed by my new ability to name all country capitals and even locate them on a blank map! I don’t know how this app does it, but it’s highly successful. For 12 whole months, there hasn’t been a week where I haven’t opened this app. I love improving and practicing my geographical knowledge with it. It truly is incredible; I cannot recommend it enough! Before finding this app, I downloaded dozens to see which style of testing I like best, this one beat them all. 5 stars!
