Old world game
A lot of what I’ve written about here in 2022 was also there in the Early Access build I played in 2020, hence me simply repeating myself a couple of times, but in the two years since I played it last Old World has refined and polished pretty much everything it could. It looks better, its splash art is gorgeous, the quests have better writing, there are more military units and the interface is slicker.
As the name suggests, Old World sticks to antiquity, slowing down Civilization’s pace to allow characters to make an impression. It would be pretty tough to do that if every turn moved things forward by decades. Your friends and enemies will be hanging around for a long time, as long as something untoward doesn’t happen to them.
Initially the game was known as 10 Crowns and was to be published by Starbreeze, but during a restructuring of Starbreeze, publishing rights were sold back, and the game was renamed and published through Epic Games Store.
When the legions of Nehekhara are called to rise from their sandy graves, fully formed cavalry columns stride out of the ancient pyramids and tomb pits. Hornblowers signal the charge and, as one, these morbid cavalry charge their quarry, the skeletal riders raising their tall shields and lowering their heavy spears in perfect unison.Skeleton Horsemen are equipped with hand weapons and shields, while their steeds utilise their skeletal hooves to deal heavy blows to the enemy.
We’ve seen plenty of 4X games that try to tackle the whole scope of human history, or our distant future among the stars. But Old World zooms in both on time and space, creating what is still a suitably epic story based exclusively around the ancient Mediterranean. In most ways, it benefits from this narrower focus, telling more intimate and less abstract stories about human society than its ancestors in the Civilization series could. At the same time, it manages to feel a fair bit more complicated and unwieldy in the process. At least at first.
